II verbo intransitivo
1 to cope [con, with]: no puedo con todo, I can't cope
2 (vencer, tener más fuerza) to be stronger than
En el presente, can y to be able to son sinónimos. Sin embargo, en el pasado could significa que podías hacer algo, mientras que was o were able to significa que, además de poder hacerlo, lo hiciste: I could tell him the truth. Podía decirle la verdad (no sabemos si lo hice). I was able to tell him the truth. Fui capaz de decirle la verdad (lo hice). En el futuro solo podemos emplear to be able to: I will be able to do it tomorrow. Podré hacerlo mañana.
Para expresar posibilidad puedes usar may, could o might. La diferencia consiste en el grado de probabilidad que sugieren. Recuerda que may se refiere a hechos más probables que might o could: Puede que llueva mañana. It may rain tomorrow (crees que es posible). It might/ could rain tomorrow (crees que la posibilidad es más remota).

Beier ad Cic. Off. 1, Exc. XI. p. 335 sq.; Cic. uses haud scio an eleven times in his Orations;F.nescio an, four times): atque haud scio an, quae dixit sint vera omnia,

COMEDIA The Spanish comedias written by dramatists of the Golden Age, or Edad de Oro, were five-act plays performed in open-air theatres. They involved stock characters similar to those of the Italian Commedia dell'Arte: a beautiful lady, her suitor, servants and go-betweens. In these comedias, which were not always comical in nature, action and a moral theme took precedence over character. Cloak and dagger episodes were built around plots involving disguises and mistaken identity. They dealt primarily with affairs of the nobility, while peasants were there to provide comic relief or to enhance particular pastoral themes. One of the most prolific comedia writers was Lope de Vega, who wrote on religious, historical and social themes. Other major comedia writers were Pedro Calderón de la Barca and Tirso de Molina, from whose pen came the figure of the archetypal seducer, Don Juan, in El Burlador de Sevilla y Convidado de Piedra (1630).¡deja de hacer comedia y di la verdad! — stop play-acting o pretending and tell the truth!
